Efficiency criteria rule the new Rexam can manufacturing plant in Mantsala, Finland

When building a new two-piece can factory, large international companies base their choice of vacuum pumps on a vast experience collected over decades in their worldwide plants. This long term analysis results in selecting solutions with the lowest Life Cycle Cost.

Typical for 2-piece can production is the continuous round-the-clock operation, the little fluctuations of the vacuum level and the mostly clean sucked media; quite simple if compared to cyclic evacuation processes with polluted media, as it happens in many other applications. In a can plant, vacuum is as important as the other energy forms, which are mostly electricity and pneumatic energy. Lack of vacuum corresponds to stop of production. As with the electrical power to run the production lines, the compressed air and the vacuum are crucial to keep up the speed of manufacturing. Lately, new machines in the 2-piece can production technology allow a higher speed and a more attractive look of the cans using embossing or special paint; even the shape of cans is variable. Only few human resources are present on the floor in such a modern factory, all the involved technicians have to fine-tune various production steps to keep the lines running, with no spare time to check on the auxiliary equipment like pumps or compressors. Thus, the selection of these machines takes in consideration the total life span, including operational, spare parts and repair costs. With such a view, the purchasing price turns into a minor expense, less than 20% over a 10-year period. Priority is the trouble-free operation with rare maintenance requirements and the continuous efficiency also after 100.000 hrs of running.

Rexam-MantsalaDeliveries of Pneumofore rotary vane vacuum pumps to the Rexam Group go back more than 30 years, some models have been specifically designed to satisfy the precise Rexam specifications. In this case of vacuum pumps for the new Mantsala plant, the specs were impressive, although related to the control only. The core element of a UV pump is the mechanical rotary vane air end, which does not change. New versions of UV pumps offer the variable speed (VS) and both pumps represented here are VS version. Air cooling is another fundamental criteria, which is satisfied by Pneumofore also in hot climate countries with up to 50° C ambient temperature. Here a heat recovery (HR) system allows to switch from air to water cooling depending on the warm water demand.

Yet, a tailored pump is insufficient, even if air cooled or if painted the color the customer wants, even with a PLC connection and variable speed drives combined with special motors to achieve optimal power savings in all manufacturing circumstances. As important are the vacuum system calculations, which are supplied by Pneumofore as a free service, since pipe diameters, curve radius and distances must all be considered to avoid vacuum- or capacity losses. Frequent is also the installation of specific devices to avoid any liquid, solid or gas pollution entering the pumps. The ease of installation and operation of UV pumps, which we believe are unsurpassed by any alternative technology, further contribute to the piece of mind of the production managers. Facts are clear, a Pneumofore rotary vane air end is not a consumable part and does not need replacement nor overhaul also after decades of operation; one yearly ordinary maintenance is sufficient to run smooth with an extraordinary low power consumption.
